Suzanne Collins is best known for her teen series, The Hunger Games, but she also has a series that’s just as exciting for younger readers and for those of us that are kids at heart, the Overlander Chronicles. She got the idea for the Overlander Chronicles after thinking what must city kids think of Alice falling down a rabbit’s hole in Alice in Wonderland. The five books in the series are all available on audio narrated by Paul Boehmer. In Gregor the Overlander, we meet eleven year-old Gregor, a New York City kid, who has become the man of the family after the mysterious disappearance of his father. The police assume his dad has run off leaving his mom, grandma, and his sisters, Lizzie and Boots. One day during summer vacation as Boots and Gregor are down in the basement laundry room, Boots falls through a grate in the wall. Gregor being the good big brother tumbles down after her. When they land they are in a strange new place, the Underland, populated by giant Cockroaches and other creatures who can talk. Gregor is not sure what to make of this new strange place he has fallen into, least of all the Cockroaches who call Boots, the Princess. Things get even stranger for Gregor and Boots when the cockroaches take them to a large arena filled with strange humans with violet eyes. Gregor just wants to take Boots and go home, but the Underlanders think Gregor has a place in a rescue operation. Will Gregor and Boots make it safely back to the Overland or will they be stuck in the Underland forever? The sequel is Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane. Three more books follow in the series.
