Homer’s Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat by Gwen Cooper

I know that many of you may not be a cat lover as I am, but this is still a book that is worth reading.  The sub-title says it all: “How I learned about love and life with a blind wonder cat.”  It is a book that not only makes you feel good, but you may also find yourself cheering at the escapades of little Homer.

The story starts in Miami and ends in New York City in the fateful year of 2001.  The author, Gwen Cooper, already had two cats, and through a twist of fate, becomes the owner of this tiny kitten. One of the amazing things about this story is that Homer does not realize that he is blind!  Shortly after birth, he had a bad eye infection. The infection blinded Homer. After several attempts to find someone to take the kitten, the doctor finally called Gwen.  She agreeed to come and “just look at the kitten” and the die was cast.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Ms. Cooper has had an assortment of living arrangements.  When the economy goes bust, Gwen is looking for work.  She expands her horizons beyond the Miami area.  She accepts a job in New York City, and moves in February of 2001. She is living in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001.  I lost family and friends that day.  To read this story from the perspective of someone lived near Ground Zero opened a window into the tragic events of that day up close and personal. she gets her cats out of that apartment (in her apartment on the 37th floor) is incredible.  I will not divulge any more than that.  You need to read the story!

Gwen’s insights give the book a wonderful dimension.  Homer, handicapped and all, is fearless.  He took on life at full speed and took no prisoners! What Gwen learned from Homer was that she needed to trust.  She had many hard knocks in her life, so she was distrustful of many people and things.  Life with Homer taught her to trust in life itself and not have any preconceived notions about people! Homer is a truly remarkable cat and his story is equally remarkable.
