Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

A totally different type of book than my friends would expect me to read: a charming tale told by gifted writer, Colm Toibin. It is post WWII and employment opportunities are hard to come by in Ireland. Eilis Lacey lives with her mother and her sister, Rose, in a small Irish town. Her brothers have gone off to seek jobs in England. Opportunity appears in the person of Father Flood who arranges of job for Eilis’ in America – in Brooklyn to be precise. Rose persuades her to take the chance and, with some foreboding, Eilis is off to the United States.

It is difficult at first. The job is easy but getting to know people after leaving her family and friends behind is very difficult. However, she is good at her job and intends to study more to become an accountant. When she meets Tony, an Italian plumber, things change for Eilis. Her life becomes more complicated and decisions will have to be made. Toibin has been shortlisted twice for the Booker Prize and, reading this charming tale, it is easy to understand why.
