Happy Thanksgiving from the Book-a-Day Blog

All Wake County Libraries are closed in celebration of Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Day has been an official American holiday since 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”. But of course, all Americans know about the first Thanksgiving, celebrated by Pilgrims and Native Americans in 1621. That year, Thanksgiving lasted for three days, but now our official celebration lasts only one day with an unofficial shopping day/sports celebration the day after.

However long you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, be sure to include some time for reading. Here are some suggestions from our reading lists:

American History on Audio

American Classics

Based in North America

Dysfunctional Families: Fiction and Nonfiction

African Americans in Historical Fiction

Frontier Women

Native Americans
